Curiosity is what led all travelers here. Curiosity will be the end of them just as well.Welcome home, to a higher calling.
Species
Psyker
Other Notable Names:
- Magician/Mage/Magus
- Sorcerer
- Witch/Wizard/Warlock
- Dreamseer/Somnambulist

The first Psyker showed up around 1760, wielding forces no man has ever seen. The radiation emitted by Aetherium had begun to alter human DNA, resulting in larger than normal pineal glands, and by extension, developing the Sixth sense. While most folks evolved to have the ability to see the energy around them; others developed much more powerful Psionic Powers such as power over the elements or even the ability to commune with the dead. Some evolved much more dangerous powers, such as the ability to see the future, though this is speculative at best.Magicians appear just like normal humans, but may be born with unusual markings or extra digits. Due to the larger pineal gland, many psykers struggle to have regular sleep schedules, or have a higher chance of developing into a night owl. Hence, their common moniker, Somnambulists.Sorcerers also have a higher chance of being born disabled or developmentally challenged. But they have been able to intergrate into regular society just fine, even excelling in some fields moreso than regular humans due to their unique thinking patterns. The 6th sense will start manifesting itself in early childhood, around the age of 3. Early signs of a developing Magician will show heavy interest in magicks, alchemical texts, or the macabre. Other signs include mumbling at walls or air, claiming to see ghosts, seeming to appear out of nowhere when you were just about to call for them.
–
Psykers can often also be created after a human has been exposed to excessive Aetherium radiation or intense trauma. Both can often awaken a Psyker’s abilities, opening the human’s 3rd eye extra sensory abilities in a moment of panic. Though, the exact conditions of such are still a mystery today.Mages are often treated as gifted or above other humans, though the culture and pressure around said conditions is tough and dour.

Monsterkin
Other Notable Names:
- Homo Onocentaurus
- Folklin
- Cryptids
Aetherium is largely an enigma to the average human, save for one of its most prolific side effects: physical transformation. When the cosmic stones touched down on Earth, their influence spread in strange and mysterious ways. These changes altered many parts of the Earth - turning landscapes into alien distortions, creating life where none had previously existed, and most notably... turning men into beasts. The last one is something that the human race has struggled with for centuries by now, as the Monsterkin are a reflection of the worst turmoils plaguing every man's psyche. Through transformation, the most prominent emotions are made into a physical form. Oftentimes, a normal person's transition into Monsterkin quite literally brings out the worst in them, causing them to lash out at those they once recognized or loved. Strings of horrific events caused by these Monsterkin prompted a combative response, and their Hunters became heroes in the eyes of the frightened masses. What studies have been made on the subject of Homo onocentaurus are few and far between, as most have been shunned by polite society or killed before they can be brought to questioning. The stigma around Monsterkin is immense, which is further amplified by the culture that hunting guilds and religious groups have sought to cultivate. Though the days of great hunts and inquisitions are behind us, the paranoia always remains. Some Monsterkin have tried their hardest to reintegrate into society and repress their urges, but said stigma has made any form of progress for them difficult.Even in relatively progressive cities such as Ringford, Monsterkin are hardly treated as human. They are grateful for the privilege of asylum, where most corners of the world would require them to hide or die, but they know they live on borrowed time. They have learned to keep quiet. They know their privilege is not far away from being revoked entirely.
Ringford

The island city formerly known as Raengfort is unusual, yet exalted in the modern age.Rapid advancements in technology and science have led some of the best and brightest minds straight to this mountainous locale. The rock that once dominated an otherwise craggy and barely habitable islet has been carved into rings blossoming outward from the impact point of a large meteor, the soil surrounding it suddenly flush with life and alien minerals. The city built on top of this Spear Crater soon rose to eminence, as it declared independence from Britain as its own governing body. Here you will find innovators, opportunists and inventors of all stripes (including the less savory ones). It has been hailed by many as a sanctuary of intellectualism and independence amidst the territorial squabbles of its neighbors, where one can escape from bloodthirsty imperialists and narrow-minded zealotry. The truth of its nature is far less romantic, and far more complicated than most of its residents even realize.
The Inner Ring

Much like a tree trunk, the innermost circles of Ringford are the oldest. Such is true of the Inner Ring, as some of the city's most ancient fixtures still stand here, albeit in pretty poor shape. All of the Old Town Ring shows a very lofty and grandiose history.Unfortunately, it also shows that save for a few key landmarks, much of that history has been left to rot. What has not been built over has been ignored, and what has been preserved does so in spite of the crumbling infrastructure. Here, the eyes of fortune are blind and uncaring. Those who are scorned or less successful tend to find themselves here, and become quickly as enriched in its deep history as they are embittered that it has seemingly been ignored by the rest of the island.
R.I.P HQ

The Ringford Institute of the Paranormal, or more commonly,
The R.I.P., is the main base of operations for Atom and Pearson. The building that not only serves as an office, but a home, to these two, was just short of being condemned before its newest tenants had moved in. The RIP building was once a post office, and its Old Town stylings speak to wonderful, creative eccentricities. Most of said eccentricities have been kept more or less intact, because renovation isn't something quite within their budget. Still, the building is charming, with an architectural personality all its own.Or at least, that's what Pearson likes to say as the building continues to fall apart at the seams. Acquiring an office through a fire sale might not have been the best idea after all, huh?Their services on offer typically extend to reformation and rehabilitative therapy, neither of which they are particularly qualified for. In absence of any competition whatsoever, the RIP is the premium monster rehabilitation provider, and they display that proudly. As the business becomes further established, soon they will both understand how no good deed comes unpunished...

The Great Ringford Atheneum

The Great Ringford Atheneum, often derisively referred to as the "Old Librarium", is a landmark of Inner Ringford of which time was perhaps the cruelest to. More than half of the tomes contained within its walls were lost to the Vast Apollonic Fire countless years ago, when the building itself had long since fallen into disrepair and ruin. Those who chose to become its stewards did so out of a sense of curiosity and preservation, not monetary gain - and it was a monumental task to uphold, indeed. The last of its stewards is a caretaker by the name of Pendragon, who is rumored to live somewhere within the library, and was responsible for repurposing the once charred and ruined wings destroyed in that great fire. Where only crumbled wood, brick and glass once stood now houses a thriving spice garden, an amateur watch repair shop, and a pawn shop. The Old Librarium, despite the mystery surrounding its shadowy benefactor, has become a fixture of esoteric goods for those willing to look for it. Though, the quality of service does not always equate to quantity of service - anyone who had ever met the clockmaker in their satellite shop has not known them to be personable or responsive. Their clients do still keep coming back, however, so surely they've done something correctly. It is said that Pendragon's success in restoring the Atheneum only happened because of the satellite services housed in the library and not the library itself, which seems like an especially callous fate for what was once a font of knowledge and hope in the community. Nonetheless, funds through the shops are funds for the library, and with the odd donation here and there? Perhaps one day, it can be the place it used to be.
Aetherium

Other Notable Names:
- Aether
- Quintessence
- The Philosopher's Stone
- Witherstone

Some couple hundred years ago, an element of otherworldly origin found its way to Earth. Its exact inception is questioned by many, but most seem to agree that its properties are highly unnatural and inscrutable. It seems to resonate deeply with an adjacent plane of reality, one where thoughts and feelings are made manifest into physical changes. It is through this element that monsters are created, and it is through harnessing this element that the mechanical miracles of modern society are born. Those who seek to catalogue the natural properties of this potent element are forever changed, in one way or another. Prolonged exposure to certain Aetherial isotopes can have disastrous consequences, very few of which are remotely predictable. As such, the scope of human comprehension remains narrow and absolute. Nobody fully understands the extent of what Aetherium is truly capable of. Nobody from this world, anyway. Those who have come closest to understanding it, is said to have "stared into the eyes of God". These accounts are passed off either as posturing or as grandiose delusions of a deteriorating human mind exposed to degenerative doses of cosmic radiation. These cases are often ignored as more efficient and safer ways to utilize Aetherium become more readily available to the burgeoning innovators and industrialists of the world, letting the rest of us enjoy the future with relative peace of mind.
Gildenganz

Black and grey markets across Ringford have one throughline: their money travels through the Golden Goose. A modest group of relatively humble origin, the Gildenganz Group gained their riches and notoriety through being a consistently trustworthy and reputable middleman. Though their money changes hands all the time, they are more than happy to lend out to anyone in need of emergency funding. Of course, said funding will come with hefty interest, and it will need to be paid promptly, lest there be consequences.Should consequences ever come to pass, you had better hope you are in good graces with your lenders.
Ringford Guard
The Ringford Guard is the city's law enforcement and domestic military rolled into one. Evoking the look of toy soldiers, Guardsmen are well trained, respectable and rigid peacekeepers, if often looked upon as quaint and silly. Salem's reformation of the Guard insisted upon building a positive, community-first image for the Guard, so the island would see them as neighbors, not oppressors. And depending on who you ask, that much has mostly been achieved. Guardsmen aren't treated as either policemen or soldiers despite filling the roles of both, though this is likely due to many people not treating them as seriously.Though their appearance may be colorful and disarming, they are still trained in military functions, and will act violently upon dangers if necessary. Though Salem would prefer them not to instigate or perpetuate conflict, he requires extreme vigilance and decisiveness of them all the same. The idea of the Guard is far more powerful than the Guard will ever be, however. They cannot be omnipresent all across the island, but almost everyone believes they can be, and that's all that matters.Whether they're a secretly potent police force ready to ruthlessly enforce the law at a moment's notice or a group of Nutcrackers in uniform made only to stand and present for parades is up to your opinion of them. And public opinion tends to vary wildly by district.
Ringford Sanctum for Young Visonaries
The youngest minds, the most malleable, always shine the brightest when they are led to take the correct steps into life. This rationale is what fuels many institutions such as this one, but the Sanctum was purpose built as a means for the best of the best to find their niche in the world - by a man who had more or less made this his goal, none other than Governor Salem himself. The Sanctum's facilities are vast and impressive, capable of accommodating the burgeoning needs of any new thinker. From state of the art equipment to some of the world's most innovative and illustrious teachers, this school is what many people would point to when they ask about the "jewel of Ringford". Critics of the Sanctum have called it a pet project fueled by vanity and vacuously vague concepts of futurism, but they are only flies on the wind. For better or worse, the Sanctum is indeed cultivating Ringford's future for generations to come. One Young Visionary at a Time.
Monster Hunter Guilds

Officially, these guilds were recognized as institutions roughly 330 years ago. They come from a variety of backgrounds and traditions, some spanning back to ancient civilizations. Prior to the formation of the Spear Craters, these groups were treated with varying degrees of respect. Some were revered as the vanguard between the human world and the frightening beyond, others were mocked viciously as paranoid, violent fools clinging to their own fears. The public support for monster hunting shot up tremendously, however, when monsters became not only fully real, but dangerous the world over.A few notable examples of said guilds include:
A small, but notorious, group of hunters, the Mistraeze-Burkes hail from a rather remote region of Ireland, where they gained their notoriety as hunters for hire when four of them held a barn against hordes of monsters lasting well into the night. This Farmhouse Siege made them legendary, and they use the collected experience of generations to train their next family members to be as adept at killing, if not better, than their predecessors.Among Monsterkin, they are known as the Mistrazors - phantoms who disappear from view until the precise moment of short, yet agonizing death. Their tall tales told amongst Monsterkin have done wonders to cement them in history, moreso than the heroic tall tales told amongst humankind.
Clan Mistraeze-Burke
The Vile Ecumene
Priests and exorcists are recruited from all across Eastern Europe and Scandinavia to partake in this coalition. They regard themselves as a religion above all else, seeking to "cleanse" areas of malicious presences or auras.Their methodology is eccentric, and their witchcraft unnerving to anyone outside their circle, but their results speak strongly for themselves. They are regarded as a cult more than a legitimate organization, and have very little presence in the West due to butting heads frequently with the Order.
One of the oldest monster hunting organizations by a far stretch, the Eight Winds are as enigmatic as they are terrifyingly efficient. Their history is closely guarded by the members of its inner circle, and as such where they truly came from is a mystery. There are more rumors than facts circulating around East Asia about who the Eight Winds really are, and so many of these stories are so frequently outrageous that it is impossible to determine truth from fiction. Some say the Eight Winds worship an old god, some say it's a cabal of vampires seeking to eradicate all other beasts from the world, some say the inner circle is immortal and has not been rotated out since its foundation.Whatever the spin on it, the only thing that is certain about the Eight Winds is their mantra -"where the fire spreads, so too shall we"
The Eight Winds
Daemon-Hunters of Shinar
Their name has been translated into several Aramaic dialects across the Middle East, but the English translation remains roughly the same. They consider themselves to be immensely proud of their humanity and mastery over technology, and seek to assert themselves as the greatest of their peers. They feel strongly of their Assyrian roots, and have occupied a portion of Iraq which they have dubbed New Sennaar.Their grasp of engineering and alchemy is vast and far-reaching - some even believe the Daemon-Hunters to be the world's best in these areas. Their technological and scientific prowess is something that their peers readily dismiss, viewing them as an insular, loose-knit coalition of warbands hoarding ancient knowledge.Nevertheless, they keep their knowledge well-protected, as New Sennaar has survived intrusions from the outside world for centuries.
